6 easy SEO strategies

More and more people are responsible for information dissemination on the Web, often without any formal — or even informal — training in search engine optimization. Here is a presentation I gave at the Online Information Conference in London On December 2:
The presentation outlines six tounge-in-cheek typologies representing tried and true ways of making content visible online. These techniques do not include tweaking of meta tags. In fact they don’t require HTML skills at all. They focus, not on building web pages that search engines like, but on writing content that real web searchers are looking for.

Google jockeying search engines in the classroom

Google jockeying search engines in the classroom
The innovative teaching practice called Google jockeying might be an effective tool to help students acquire skills for online research while mimicking their own learning strategies.

Come again?
Are you asking yourself what on earth Google jockeying might be and trying to figure out where horse racing enters into web searching? The answer is not so outlandish:

A Google jockey is someone who takes part in a presentation or class and surfs the Internet for web sites or resources mentioned by the presenter or terms and ideas related to the topic. These searches are displayed along with the presentation and are meant clarify the topic and provide further learning opportunities.

Although this practice takes its name from Google, any search engine will do. The Google jockey will search for definitions, images or multimedia files and other online resources that illuminate the topic.

The practice of Google Jockeying appears to have been started at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California (USC). The idea surfaced while a professor was preparing a lecture in which he would be discussing a wide range of disparate ideas. Colleagues at USC then incorporated the practice into several courses, workshops and conferences.

The activities of the Google jockey might influence the direction of the lecture or the Google jockey might represent a true “back channel, taking place as a corollary to the primary lecture without affecting it directly.

The pros and cons
This practice is significant because today’s students are Internet natives — they have known this technology since childhood. With the relatively recent addition of broad band Internet access and always-on communication, many students are used to being exposed to multiple sources of input. Some have even come to expect this kind of communication.

Google jockeying mimics a way of working that many students are used to from their work on group assignments. With Google jockeying they benefit both from immediate access to online resources and from the research techniques of the Google jockey.

The success of a practice like this depends on the skill of the Google jockey. If the jockey is not an adept searcher, the benefits of this added activity vanish and it turns into distractions.

Although many students crave the kind of multiple input that Google jockeying provide, others are not comfortable multitasking. They will probably find the practice more distracting than helpful. Because of this, it might be wise to consult students before including this practice in the classroom.

Research skills for students
Google jockeying is described and promoted as a technology supported teaching practice by the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). In their presentation of Google jockeying ELI describe this important benefit of this teaching innovation:

“Students use and understand the tools and techniques of Google jockeying, but evidence shows that many students lack strong information fluency skills, despite having been raised on technology. Students believe in online research, but many are not adept at conducting Web research efficiently or at discerning reliable online information from material that is suspect. Despite research indicating that using multiple search engines significantly expands the results obtained, many latch on to a single search engine and never stray from it. Google jockeying vividly shows the benefits of diversifying searches and functions as a real-time demonstration of searching for, cross-checking, and evaluating online resources.”

So for student groups that have the right kind of technology know-how, Google jockeying might be a means of fostering research skills while at the same time enriching and expanding a course.

The presentation of Google jockeying is part of the “7 Things You Should Know About…” series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, which provides concise information on emerging learning practices and technologies. Each brief focuses on a single practice or technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use “7 Things You Should Know About…” briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share them with time-pressed colleagues.

~Porsche Carrera GT Design

The Porsche Carrera GT is a roadster of sorts, but it has no disappearing roof, hard or otherwise. Instead, two top panels are stored in the GT's front trunk, which also serves as the only luggage compartment. So, if you're out for a summer weekend jaunt, you have a choice. You can either take the roof in case it rains, or luggage in case you stay over. But not both. There are also some hidden compartments in each door for smaller items, along with a nook in the center console. Hidden on the underside of the console, the CD player is almost impossible to access without reaching over into the passenger side and then snaking your arm up under the dash. Otherwise, the GT's cockpit is just as stylishas its exterior, and replete with just as much realcarbon fiber.

Champions trophy to be held in India from Sep 29-Oct 9: Modi

Unable to break the stand-off over Twenty20 Champions League with the ECB, BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi has made it clear that the tournament would be played in India from September 29 to October 8 at three venues - Jaipur, New Delhi and Mohali.
Modi also said England cricketers were unlikely to feature in the tournament as their Board was unreasonably objecting to various rules and regulations, the ban on ICL players, the share-holding pattern and profit-sharing formula.
With England participation in doubt, Pakistan has been convinced to replace them in the League, which was originally scheduled to feature top two Twenty20 domestic teams from India, Australia, South Africa and England.
The details of the tournament, would be finalised in Mumbai on Wednesday at a meeting to be attended by officials from the BCCI, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) but England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will go unrepresented.
"We are going ahead with the tournament whether England joins up or not," Modi was quoted as saying by the 'cricinfo'.
"South Africa and Australia are fully on board with the various rules and regulations but the ECB is being unreasonable and continues to have objections to issues like the shareholding pattern and the governing structure. But we can't wait any longer and we are going ahead. It's now up to the ECB to decide whether it wants to join us or not," he said.
Modi's statement came after the English press reported that the ECB was finalising a "rival" Champions League, to be held in Abu Dhabi.

New Google box for offices can search 10 mn files

Google Inc said on Tuesday it is offering an upgraded version of the hardware appliance it sells to companies and government organizations for Google-style Web search of office documents.
The Web search leader said the latest version of the Google Search Appliance, a pizza-sized box that holds a self-contained search system for managing an organization's electronic files, can store up to 10 million documents in a single box.
The new product has the same capacity as a previous version that came in a five-box rack. Google already sells a 12-box version of the appliance in a rack the size of a stand-up refrigerator that can search up to 30 million documents.
The appliances contain Google software to power the search services, running on storage hardware from Dell Inc.
Once installed in a network, the appliances help staff find documents in various different corporate store houses, from EMC Corp's Documentum, IBM's FileNet, Open Text's LiveLink and Microsoft Corp's SharePoint.
New features in the latest model include greater encryption powers and the ability for Google Alerts to notify users when new documents are stored on the network by colleagues.
Network administrators will be able to manage Google Search Appliances in 27 languages, adding Turkish, Czech, Vietnamese and Portuguese. The boxes can, in turn, deliver search results to office workers in 40 different languages.
Mountain View, California-based Google does not disclose revenue for search appliances, which are part of its enterprise software and services business aimed at corporate buyers.
Roughly 98 percent of its revenue comes from advertising sold alongside services on Google.com and affiliated sites.
But because Google does not reveal revenue for the business, it is hard to verify its claims to be the market share leader in enterprise, as well as consumer, search.
"We estimate, with obviously imperfect information, that we are the market leader," Matt Glotzbach, product management director for Google Enterprise, said in a phone interview.
Rival providers of search used inside company networks include Microsoft, IBM, and Autonomy of Britain.

Bindra clinches India's first individual Olympic gold

World champion Abhinav Bindra clinched India's first ever individual gold medal at the Olympics, winning 10m air rifle event at the Beijing Games in Beijing on Monday.
The 25-year-old, who qualified fourth for the event, shot an overall score of (596+140.5) 700.5 in a thrilling finale which went right down to the last shot.
Bindra's historic feat makes him India's first-ever individual gold medallist, bettering the silver medal feat of double trap shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in Athens 2004.
"He is the best shooter in the world and I think his is a morale boosting feat for everyone in the contingent," a jubilant Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi said after Bindra's win.
"We are all very happy. He is a very hardworking athlete. The entire shooting contingent is celebrating. We are very proud of him and it is just the beginning," national coach Sunny Thomas said.
"Abhinav is a very calm and composed guy and doesn't get very excited," Thomas added.
Bindra, a Khel Ratna awardee, had earlier won the gold medal in 2002 Commonwealth Games in the pairs event and silver in the individual event.
Earlier, Gagan Narang had failed to qualify for the finals of the same event after falling short in the count-back.
The silver in the event went to Chinese Zhu Qinan (699.7) while Finland's Henri Hakkinen (699.4) had to be content with a bronze.
